Blue Monday

It is said that the saddest day of the year falls on a Monday and it is known as Blue Monday.

Blue means sad in English, hence its name. It is usually the third Monday of January.

This is mainly due to the bad weather, the long dark nights, the after Christmas expenses which have turned into debts and the unfulfilled New Year’s Resolutions.

It was in 2005 when Cliff Arnall, a psychologist and life coach decided to publish the expression for the first time.

Cliff created a formula to determine the saddest day of the year.

Calculation:

The Blue Monday formula is expressed as:

Where:

W = weather, bad weather and little natural light exposure

D = debt, unable to pay the credits and expenses at Christmas

d = monthly salary, unable to cope up with expenses

T = time since Christmas, holidays and good moments left behind.

Q = time since the failure to achieve new year’s resolutions.

M = low motivational levels.

Na = the feeling of a need to take action.

However, this belief is not backed up by science. True clinical depression is more than just post Christmas blues or sadness. It is a complex condition caused by a huge number of internal and external factors, some of which can be either long-term or temporary.

It is absolutely unlikely that a set of factors could accurately predict depression in the entire world at the same time.

Have a Happy Monday !!
